Chansonnier Casanatense, Roma, Biblioteca Casanatense Ms 285

This chansonnier was probably created in Ferrara for the Este family. It dates from around 1480 to 1490. It has not a single text and is thus conceived as an instrumental collection. In this context it is extremely interesting that it simplifies systematically and eradicates former ornamentations so as to give the players the utmost freedom in ornamenting themselves. The chansonnier comprises almost all songs by Johannes Martini and many songs by Agricola, thus being very close to Florence 229.
