Robert J. Mitchell: A new look at the Turin J.II.9 motet repertory
This article marshals much current information on the 41 motets in the manuscript Turin
J.II.9, it suggests a few more likely western influences for individual works, and investigates
their sometimes dissonant four-part textures. The likelihood of some of the motet texts being
by a single author is also investigated, and it is proposed that many of these motets may
share a common composer. The author is a freelance scholar who has previously written about
the Mass Ordinary settings in the same manuscript and has also done much editorial and
research work on the later Trent Codices. My thanks for perusal and help with this article go to
Margaret Bent and Mike Beauvois, and to Jeff Begeal for assistance with some of the texts.
