Summary: Wagnerianism in Tadeusz Zieliński’s Translations of Greek Tragedies. Tadeusz Zielinski (1859 – 1944) was not only a distinguished classicist, but one of the most influential cultural figures in Eastern and Central Europe. Born in Russia into a family of Polish origin, he enjoyed an excellent German education and deployed a remarkable teaching activity in Saint Petersburg. His scholarly works – many of them written in brilliant German – , his translations, popular books and articles published in Russian and other European languages found a large readership far beyond the limits of classical scholarship. Later he emigrated to Warsaw. He established cultural links between Russian, Polish, German, and classical culture. The author shows convincingly that (in his authoritative Russian translations of Sophocles) Zielinski’s ideas on theatre and dramaturgy were influenced by Wagner’s operas.
