practices\u00a0 in\u00a0 the\u00a0 secular\u00a0 music\u00a0 of\u00a0 mid-fifteenth-century\u00a0 German\u00a0 sources.\u00a0 At\u00a0 the\u00a0 heart\u00a0 of\u00a0 the\u00a0 research\u00a0 are\u00a0 case\u00a0 studies\u00a0 of\u00a0 the\u00a0 Lochamer\u00a0 Liederbuch\u00a0 with\u00a0 its\u00a0 two\u00a0 sections\u2014a\u00a0 song\u00a0 and\u00a0 a\u00a0 keyboard\u00a0 collection\u2014and\u00a0 of\u00a0 the\u00a0 newly\u00a0 discovered\u00a0 Wolfenb\u00fcttel\u00a0 Lute\u00a0 Tablature.\u00a0 By\u00a0 analysing\u00a0 and\u00a0 comparing\u00a0 the\u00a0 different\u00a0 versions\u00a0 of\u00a0 pieces\u00a0 surviving\u00a0 in\u00a0 these\u00a0 and\u00a0 related\u00a0 sources\u00a0 I\u00a0 explore\u00a0 how\u00a0 they\u00a0 interacted\u00a0 and\u00a0 what\u00a0 the\u00a0 motivations\u00a0 and\u00a0 techniques\u00a0 behind\u00a0 their\u00a0 transformation\u00a0 were.\u00a0 The\u00a0 organist\u00a0 and\u00a0 lute\u00a0 player\u00a0 Conrad\u00a0 Paumann\u00a0 and\u00a0 his\u00a0 \u2018School\u2019\u00a0 were\u00a0 central\u00a0 driving\u00a0 forces\u00a0 in\u00a0 this\u00a0 process,\u00a0 which\u00a0 led\u00a0 to\u00a0 numerous\u00a0 innovations,\u00a0 particularly\u00a0 in\u00a0 the\u00a0 development\u00a0 of\u00a0 instrumental\u00a0 music\u00a0 and\u00a0 its\u00a0 notation.\u00a0 I\u00a0 then\u00a0 investigate\u00a0 the\u00a0 question\u00a0 of\u00a0 the\u00a0 instrumental\u00a0 accompaniment\u00a0 of\u00a0 monophonic\u00a0 song\u00a0 and\u00a0 how\u00a0 the\u00a0 development\u00a0 of\u00a0 new\u00a0 instruments\u00a0 and\u00a0 techniques\u00a0 influenced\u00a0 and\u00a0 shaped\u00a0 the\u00a0 melody\u00a0 types\u00a0 in\u00a0 the\u00a0 late\u00a0 medieval\u00a0 sources.\u00a0 To\u00a0 do\u00a0 this,\u00a0 I\u00a0 consult\u00a0 the\u00a0 genre\u00a0 of\u00a0 Neidhart\u00a0 songs\u00a0 as\u00a0 an\u00a0 oeuvre\u00a0 of\u00a0 secular\u00a0 song\u00a0 that\u00a0 was\u00a0 cultivated\u00a0 and\u00a0 transmitted\u00a0 in\u00a0 sources\u00a0 from\u00a0 the\u00a0 thirteenth\u00a0 to\u00a0 the\u00a0 fifteenth\u00a0 centuries.\u00a0 The\u00a0 network\u00a0 of\u00a0 interdependencies\u00a0 between\u00a0 repertoires\u00a0 enables\u00a0 an\u00a0 analysis\u00a0 of\u00a0 transformational\u00a0 practices\u00a0 in\u00a0 the\u00a0 songs\u00a0 of\u00a0 Oswald\u00a0 von\u00a0 Wolkenstein,\u00a0 which\u00a0 are\u00a0 influenced\u00a0 by\u00a0 the\u00a0 Neidhart-genre.\u00a0 The\u00a0 analysis\u00a0 comes\u00a0 full\u00a0 circle\u00a0 with\u00a0 reworkings\u00a0 of\u00a0 his\u00a0 melodies\u00a0 in\u00a0 the\u00a0 Lochamer\u00a0 Liederbuch\u00a0 and\u00a0 related\u00a0 sources.\u00a0 The\u00a0 study\u00a0 shows\u00a0 that\u00a0 vocal\u00a0 music\u00a0 and\u00a0 instrumental\u00a0 intabulations\u00a0 influenced\u00a0 each\u00a0 other\u00a0 mutually\u00a0 to\u00a0 create\u00a0 new\u00a0 repertoires\u00a0 and\u00a0 styles.\u00a0 Amongst\u00a0 the\u00a0 most\u00a0 significant\u00a0 insights\u00a0 are\u00a0 the\u00a0 findings\u00a0 around\u00a0 the\u00a0 Wolfenb\u00fcttel\u00a0 Lute\u00a0 Tablature,\u00a0 which\u00a0 open\u00a0 up\u00a0 a\u00a0 field\u00a0 of\u00a0 hitherto\u00a0 unknown\u00a0 instrumental\u00a0 practices\u00a0 and\u00a0 playing\u00a0 techniques,\u00a0 particularly\u00a0 on\u00a0 the\u00a0 plectrum\u00a0 lute.\u00a0 The\u00a0 process\u00a0 of\u00a0 transferring\u00a0 intabulation\u00a0 techniques\u00a0 from\u00a0 the\u00a0 keyboard\u00a0 to\u00a0 other\u00a0 polyphonic\u00a0 instruments\u00a0 leads\u00a0 to\u00a0 the\u00a0 formulation\u00a0 of\u00a0 a\u00a0 coherent,\u00a0 \u2018pan-instrumental\u2019\u00a0 style\u00a0 of\u00a0 solo\u00a0 intabulation\u00a0 in\u00a0 the\u00a0 fifteenth\u00a0 century.<\/p>\n<p><a
